The purpose of this template is to automatically provide a country link to a specific country page of a championships or games (for example [[United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics]]) on results articles for those competitions. The competition is derived automatically from the page title, so for example on the article [[Athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 metres]] a link will be automatically generated for "X at the 2012 Summer Olympics". The template will return any text in the title that is after " at the " and before " – ". Titles without those elements will be returned in full (e.g. [[2015 World Championships in Athletics]])<br />

The optional link modifier is for athletics championships and should be a prefix to a competition named "...Championships in Athletics". For example, if "2013 World" is entered in this modifier, the outputted link will be for that country at the "2013 World Championships in Athletics".<br />
<br />
Variants to the flag (for a country's historical flags, for example) can be generated by placing the variant code in the fourth field.<br />
