The Boreal War (DAY MONTH 2329 – DAY MONTH 2340) was a global conflict almost exclusively fought in the Northern Hemisphere of Basis.

Background

Political and military alliances

The structural reasons that explain the outbreak of the Boreal War include strong nationalism, the rise of imperialism, and the expansionist ambitions associated with them, such as Holarian irredentism, previous unresolved conflicts (NAME War and Holaro–Thyonese War), to which are added economic rivalries, a complex system of military alliances developed between the different Darochian and Meranian countries during the early 24th century following the tumultuous 23rd century, which notably saw the Qymo–Thyonese Wars and the OCEAN War.

In Meran, a shift in alliances between the great powers occurred in the decade before the war. Qym, whose historical rivals were in Southern Meran, particularly Prugundy and Thyon, signed a non-aggression pact with the latter in 2323. That same year, Prugundy, a long-standing Thyonese ally, allied with Holaria, a long-standing Qymish ally and Thyonese rival, as well as with the Darochian great power of Riuden. Two years later in 2325, the three powers signed a new alliance treaty with Zandomia that became known as the Great Alliance.

In response, the Nagur Pact was signed on DAY MONTH 2327 in Nagur, County of Nagur, Qym, by the representatives of Astamon, Gosaria, Imendia, and Qym. After several diplomatic overtures and a personal meeting between King Bacha XV and THYONESE ARCHON, Thyon officially joined the pact on DAY MONTH 2329 along with Tamodia, while a Holarian military build-up was ongoing at their respective borders.

Prelude

• Holaria wants the regions within Tamodia that are populated by Holarian people and gives Tamodia an ultimatum to cede the territories or they will occupy them by force at a specific date.
• Tamodia asks Qym and Thyon for help. Not wanting to be dragged in a war, Qym proposes giving away the land, but to not comply with the demands fully. Thyon says not to comply with anything, guaranteeing Tamodia's territorial integrity (?)
• Tamodia does not reply to the ultimatum, following Thyon's advice. Qym and Prugundy jointly request an extension of the ultimatum and request a conference to discuss the issue. Holaria refuses an extension but agrees to a conference.
• Holaria sees Qymish reluctance as a sign to press on, assuming Qym would not join the war and Holaria would only have to fight Thyon. Holaria prepares a military build-up at its border. Thyon does the same.
• A conference is held in Lasund a week before the ultimatum expires between the foreign ministers DUDE (Holaria), DUDE (Thyon), DUDE (Qym), DUDE (Prugundy) and DUDE (Tamodia).
• Simultaneously, a secret meeting between THYONESE ARCHON, Bacha XV and TAMODIAN KING is held on a boat on the NAME River in Qomach, Tamodia, across from Teurek and WILLEMGRAD, to negotiate the entry of Thyon and Tamodia into the Nagur Pact. Upon boarding, the 72 year old Bacha XV jokingly exclaims: "We'd better not capsize." To which THYONESE ARCHON allegedly replies: "Fuck off. This is not the time". Bacha XV pre-emptively guarantees the ratification of Thyon and Tamodia's joint application to join the Nagur Pact, informing the other two it is already accepted, even with Astamon. Qym had assured direct involvement in Daroch if requested by Astamon. Therefore, all that is left is the ratification from Thyon, as the Tamodian King ratifies it on the spot.
• Holarian spies in Thyon report to Lasund that an emergency session of both houses of the Federal Assembly is to be held regarding a vote to join the Nagur Pact.
• Due to miscommunication, Holarian leaders believe the vote is for applying to join the Nagur Pact rather than ratifying an already successful application. Unimpressed, they order the Holarian army to move into Tamodia to cut off the Qymo-Thyonese alliance, assuming the Nagur Pact would back off in fear of the Great Alliance once the war started.
• Thyon and Tamodia officially join the Nagur Pact on DAY MONTH after emergency ratification votes in the Federal Assembly.
• The same day, Holaria declares war and invades Tamodia before the expiration of their ultimatum, canceling and denouncing the Lasund Conference as Qymish and Thyonese perfidy.

Course of the war

First half: restraint (2329–2333)

• Holaria realizes Thyon and Tamodia actually joined the Nagur Pact and therefore only occupies the Tamodian territories with Halorian people.
• Qym mobilizes, prompting Prugundy to do the same. Prugundy tries to open diplomatic channels with Qym to avoid a war.

Legacy

Memorials

Thousands of memorials were built after the war to commemorate specific battles or casualties in general.

The Boreal War Memorial in Teurek is the largest memorial in Qym, commemorating the fierce Battle of Teurek. It holds the remains of 75,000 identified Qymish soldiers and over 125,000 unknown soldiers, honoring 200,000 soldiers in total. U/C
