The Theomedil Peace Accords, officially the FULLNAME, was a peace agreement signed on DAY MONTH 2367 to establish peace in the Southern Hemisphere and end the Austral War. It was signed by the Transhumanist Republic of Geno, the Republic of Methelor, the Federation of Wishumba, and the Kingdom of Qym.
Provisions
The actions of the negotiators – DUDE for Geno, DUDE for Methelor, DUDE for Wishumba, and DUDE for Qym – brought an end to 14 years of war. The agreement stipulated the withdrawal of the Qymish Armed Forces within two months and release of prisoners. In exchange, Geno pledged to release all its prisoners and progressively destroy its stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons with the aim of formally acceding to the Patsalys Protocols within the next 10 years. However, the Geno problem was far from resolved: Qym withdrew from the conflict to avoid a complete conventional warfare defeat or having to start a nuclear war. The strategy behind Bacha XVI's maneuver was to withdraw before the final defeat, in a peace that was honorable for him and mitigated more internal opposition to his rule at home. Yet, Qym's war aims were not achieved as Geno's transhumanist regime prevailed and came out of the war stronger and legitimized on the international stage. Furthermore, their commitment to destroy their stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons was not only meant to appease Qym, but also Methelor and Wishumba, yet it lacked compliance and monitoring mechanisms.
Further provisions included the progressive easing of international sanctions against Geno with a complete removal of sanctions upon the destruction of all its stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. It also included the normalization of relations between Qym and Geno, as well as a "commitment to investigate and punish perpetrators of war crimes".
Aftermath
The accords had a significant impact on Qymish politics. Protests against the royal family and the lack of accountability for the failure of war erupted in many Qymish cities. In 2368, Bacha XVI established a royal commission to investigate war crimes perpetrated by Qymish troops during the war, in compliance with the accords. A year later, in 2369, the Qymish Republican Front was formed and republicanism grew in opposition to the monarchy. In 2372, the Royal War Crimes Commission's report on war crimes committed by Qym during the war was published and 12 Qymish military leaders were subsequently court-martialed and imprisoned.
In Methelor, the accords were seen as a massive victory, as it achieved all of its war aims: not only did the Nagur Pact collapse, but Qym fully withdrew from Visala while Methelor emerged as a nuclear state. Furthermore, it managed to navigate its complex domestic politics regarding the war with an accord that satisfied most political parties. Ānist nationalists were content with the humiliating withdrawal of heathens, while moderates and liberals were content with Qymish and Genonian commitments to investigate war crimes and destroy chemical and biological weapon stockpiles.
In Wishumba, the accords were unpopular and appeared too lenient on Qym. U/C
In Geno, the accords were met with relief and were seen as an important victory against "enemies of transhumanism" despite concessions. In reality, the Transhumanist Party had no intention of fully complying with the accords' provisions and only marginally reduced its stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. A tribunal to investigate war crimes was set up, but these were show trials intended to appease Methelor and Wishumba, and pretend as if Geno was honoring the accords. By the mid 2370s, it became clear that it was not the case and sanctions remained. In 2376, Geno simultaneously hijacked six Vajdila-made airliners on the same day and took over 1,000 people on board as hostage. The hostages were later released but the aircraft remained in Geno who reverse engineers them as part of the development of its own Azmin airliners.
